The Perfect Headphones For Any Occasion : AirPods Pro

First Impressions Of The AirPods Pro

I finally got the chance to get a pair of AirPods Pro, the advanced version of Apple’s True Wireless headphones, and try them out intensely. Many people ask: “Are traditional AirPods better than AirPods Pro?” In this article, we clarify any doubts. Meanwhile, the AirPods Pro is not to be considered the third generation of traditional AirPods but a product in its own right.

The AirPods Pro have a completely different design, both in the basic structure of the headphones and in the shape of the box; they have different playback controls than the standard AirPods and have more functions, such as active noise cancellation and listening mode. Environmental. AirPods Pro serves many people who are often on the go, do a lot of sports, or need features like active noise cancellation or ambient listening mode.

Traditional AirPods, on the other hand, are pretty standard earphones. They have the same shape as the EarPods earphones, which are the earphones we find in every iPhone’s box.

Traditional AirPods are made for those who, on the other hand, listen to music, for example, while doing housework or taking a bike ride or a walk in the countryside.

So with that said, let’s break down the features of the AirPods Pro.

Design

The design of the AirPods Pro is very different from that of traditional AirPods. First of all, they are in-ear headphones. So this means they are equipped with silicone rubber pads that slip inside the ear canal and the flat support that remains from traditional AirPods. The stem of the AirPods Pro is shortened by half compared to traditional AirPods and is equipped with a pressure sensor that serves for the controls, which we will discuss later. The microphone is visible on the outside of the AirPods Pro, which has been moved from the traditional AirPods.

This is for two reasons: to insert the gasket for waterproofing and to allow the active noise cancellation mode and the environmental listening mode. The AirPods Pro is equipped with two external and one internal microphone. This significantly improves the audio during calls and allows modes such as active noise cancellation or ambient listening mode. The second microphone placed inside allows you to pick up the noises coming from the ear and cancel them and creates the noise in the counter phase to cancel the noises picked up by the external microphone.

The rubber pads of the AirPods Pro have small air vents. This allows for excellent stability inside the ear and reduces the pressure effect when we activate the noise-canceling mode or insert the headphones inside the ear. In the long run, you will hear your music, not your headphones. The mid-size rubber pads come pre-installed on the AirPods Pro. In the package, however, there are two spare pairs, a small pair and a large pair. To change the rubber pads, uninstall them from the AirPods Pro by simply pulling them, then install the new pair of rubber pads by inserting each rubber in the appropriate slot of the AirPods Pro.

When the rubber fits, you will hear a click. You need to find the right size of noise canceling pads, the ambient listening mode, the stability of the earphones themselves, and adaptive audio equalization. A software function in the settings helps you understand if the pads are the correct size. If the ear tips are wrong, you will feel the earphones unstable on your ears; when you enable noise cancellation, the noise will escape from the earphones making this feature useless, and the audio equalization will not be optimal.

The box of the AirPods Pro radically changes the opening mechanism. It will now open from the long side, unlike traditional AirPods, where the opening is on the short side. The portability of the device remains exceptionally portable and fits in any pocket. The box holds the lightning port for charging. But it can also be recharged by placing it on any wireless charging base. I cannot give an opinion on the design of the AirPods Pro because, thanks to this design, we can have functions such as noise cancellation or ambient listening mode.

Checks

On the AirPods Pro, the controls change dramatically. Now the controls have been moved to the stem of the AirPods Pro, where there is a pressure sensor. Now we will no longer have to touch, but we will have to press with two fingers. Now you need to grab the earphones with your two fingers, thumb on one side and index finger on the other, and apply pressure. When the system picks up the pressure, a click will be played on the earpiece where we apply the pressure. A double press pauses or resumes playback, and a double press sends the next song; a triple press returns to the previous song.

There remains the gesture that allows you to pause a song by removing an earphone and resume playback by inserting the earphone. The long press of the sensor will select the noise control mode, then noise cancellation or ambient listening mode. Long press is the only gesture that can be customized from the settings. All other types of pressure are standard and cannot be customized. We can choose for each earphone if the long press will activate Siri, select a noise control mode or if it will not be active.

We can also customize which noise control modes to activate with each long press. By default, the long press is used to switch from the noise cancellation mode to the ambient mode and vice versa. At the same time, we can activate the neutral mode, then deactivate all the noise control modes and be passively isolated from the rubber pads of the AirPods Pro, only from the iPhone settings or the control center. However, we can combine the noise control modes with being selected with each long press to our liking.

We can leave the default settings; the possible combinations are noise canceling and neutral, ambient and neutral, ambient and noise canceling, or all 3. We can also change the noise control modes from the settings, Bluetooth tab, and AirPods Pro or perform a haptic touch or three-touch on the volume icon in the control center. The Siri voice assistant is always available, which can be called up via the phrase “Hey Siri” or by selecting the Siri mode in the settings relating to long press.

Noise Cancellation

I dedicate a paragraph to noise cancellation because it is the key feature of these earphones.

The noise cancellation function is made possible thanks to 2 microphones positioned outside and one inside, as mentioned before, and the passive isolation caused by the silicone rubber pads. This is why it is necessary to choose the right size of ear tips before using the AirPods.

By default, noise cancellation is already active from the first pairing. When you put the AirPods on, you will hear the volume of external noises drop considerably, and you will still feel a slight pressure inside your ears, even if the rubber pads are made to reduce it to a minimum.

The AirPods Pro’s active noise cancellation works well. Sometimes it works even better than the noise cancellation offered by much more professional headphones. It does not bother us. It adapts to the amount of noise in the environment and the shape of our ears, allowing us to maintain the same amount of isolation for all the places where we are. If you turn on ambient noise cancellation but aren’t listening to anything, you will still experience some ambient noise. However, once you start a song, there will be only silence around you.

Ambient Mode

Another essential feature of the AirPods Pro is the ambient mode.  Unlike the noise canceling mode, the ambient mode allows the microphones to counteract the insulating effect of the rubber pads by letting the ambient noise pass, putting what is reproduced in the headphones out of scope. This is useful for students using VoiceOver, who can hear the lesson loud while listening to the VoiceOver voice in the background. It is also useful when we find ourselves walking down the street while talking on the phone or listening to the navigator.

so we can continue listening to what we are listening to without isolating ourselves too much from the noise. The beauty is that the ambient listening mode has no adjustable volume since it is not an accurate amplification in the headphones of the noises coming from the outside. So, we can turn down the volume of what’s in the headphones without affecting the volume of the ambient listening mode.

Audio And Adaptive Equalizer

The AirPods Pro is equipped with an audio adjustment technology called Adaptive Equalizer.

But adaptive to what? Meanwhile, the audio equalizer of the AirPods Pro adapts to the shape of our ear, to the passive isolation created by the rubber pads, and to the song we are playing.

The AirPods Pro will read the audio parameters of the track to be played in advance and automatically adjust. If the song we are playing has high bass, low mid, and high treble, the equalizer of the AirPods will raise the bass and treble and lower the mid frequencies to allow optimal listening. It is clear that if the size of the rubber pads we are wearing is wrong, adaptive equalization will not work.

Battery

The AirPods Pro offers a truly extensive battery. The box can charge individual AirPods for 24 hours. Each AirPod offers 4.5 hours of continuous listening with noise cancellation or ambient listening mode active and up to 6 hours of listening in neutral.

Conclusions

Suppose you are a sportsman, student, or traveler or want a pair of headphones with genuinely great sound, noise cancellation, maximum portability, and ambient listening mode. In that case, these are the headphones for you. They’re worth all the $ 279 they ask for for the functions they have, except for one thing. Apple put a USB C Lightning cable in the box but did not include the USB C power adapter. However, the problem does not arise if you have an iPhone or a wireless charging base, the problem does not arise. You can charge the AirPods with any lightning cable used to charge the iPhone. So, the price is high but reasonable.
