Samsung Galaxy S23: Three Improvements We Expect

We’d like to see Samsung improve basics like the camera, battery life, and charging time.

Samsung typically releases new Galaxy S23 devices in the first two months of the year, and early rumors suggest the company will stick with that schedule in 2023. Samsung dominates the smartphone industry, with 21% of the global market in Q2 2022. Updating core features like the camera and battery could help it retain that top spot, especially as it faces increased competition from Apple and Google.

More Autonomy For The Samsung Galaxy S23

Battery life can never be long enough, but the standard Galaxy S needs a boost. The 6.1-inch Galaxy S22 generally lives up to Samsung’s claims of all-day battery life, but sometimes barely.

The Galaxy S22 has the smallest battery (3,700 mAh) of the three members of the Galaxy S22 line, and it shows. For example, we were pleasantly surprised when the 6.6-inch Galaxy S22 Plus, which has a larger 4,500mAh battery, lasted about a day and a half. We also had the refresh rate set too high, draining the battery faster. The Galaxy S22 Ultra, with a 6.8-inch display and 5,000 mAh battery, had similar battery life.

It’s a good idea that the littlest telephone in the Universe S22 line likewise has the littlest battery. But we’re hoping that Samsung can improve the battery life of next year’s 6.1-inch Galaxy, whether through better power efficiency or a larger physical battery. After all, Apple has made improvements to the iPhone 13 mini that gave it an extra two to three hours of battery life compared to the iPhone 12 mini. Battery life is the biggest black spot we mentioned in our Galaxy S22 review, and fixing it would make the Galaxy S23 an even more compelling choice for Android fans who prefer compact smartphones.

More Smart Camera Features

The Galaxy S22’s 50-megapixel camera and Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 108-megapixel camera capture photos with impressive color and detail. We only wish we could do more with these devices regarding editing and software features. The Galaxy S22 range offers shooting options such as panorama, night mode, portrait mode, slow motion, super slow motion and Director’s View, which allows you to record videos using two different lenses simultaneously.

There’s also the Single Take feature, which lets you create multiple stylish shots with a single shutter button press. You can likewise download the Master Crude application for better command over photograph settings.

But not much has changed between the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S22 regarding camera functions and shooting modes. We want Samsung to take a cue from Google, which regularly adds camera features that feel more practical than gimmicky.

For example, Google introduced a new feature on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro called Photo Unblur, which helps sharpen low-quality photos, even those taken with an older camera. Photo Unblur builds on Face Unblur, a previous Pixel 6 and 6 Pro feature that we like too. As the name proposes, Face Clarify freezes moving subjects that could make some way or another look foggy.

Features like these show that Google isn’t just thinking about camera quality but ways to eliminate the day-to-day hassles of mobile photography. On the other hand, many of Samsung’s updates seem intended to give content creators more tools to capture different types of photos and video clips.

While the Galaxy S23 likely won’t launch for another two or three months, Samsung is already making improvements to the cameras in its current Galaxy phones. It added a new feature to the Expert Raw app that helps stargazers take better photos of constellations, similar to Google’s Astrophotography feature for Pixel phones.

Faster Charging That Doesn’t Cost Much

The Galaxy S22 range supports fast charging up to 25 watts for the Galaxy S22 and 45 watts for the Galaxy S22 Plus and Ultra. But it would help if you bought a separate charger to do that. With the Galaxy S23, we’d like to see a more noticeable improvement in charging speeds and more affordable charger options.

The OnePlus 10 Pro, for example, offers 65 or 80 watts of fast charging depending on your region, which is faster than what Samsung offers on paper. OnePlus also includes a compatible adapter in the box. Samsung and Apple have stopped including adapters in the package.

But we’d like Samsung to let you choose to include an optional fast-charging compatible adapter for a discounted price when you order a new phone, the same way it allows you to choose a capacity choice or add Samsung Care In addition. If the rumors are correct, the base model Galaxy S23 could have the same 25-watt charging speed as the Galaxy S22.

So says Ice Universe, a Twitter account that posts details about unreleased Samsung products. Samsung is already doing many cool things with the Galaxy S22, especially regarding software support and display quality. But as year-over-year smartphone upgrades have become more incremental than revolutionary, focusing on the basics, like the camera and battery, is more important than ever.
