Do More With Less – Cybersecurity In 2021

The pandemic changed the way we work almost overnight, and information security departments are still trying to adapt. What does the future of employees look like this year?

In the past year, many companies have been forced to change their way of working and consequently switch to other approaches to information security (InfoSec). We are interested in the IT challenges in times of the pandemic, and that is why we surveyed 5,266 IT decision-makers in 31 countries on this topic. Respondents talked about the threats they faced, the cost of resolving cyber incidents, and the current security situation in their company.

Discover more about the most important trends of the past year, forecasts for the current year, and helpful advice from Kaspersky and invited experts in our report ” Plugging the gaps: 2021 corporate IT security predictions “.

IT Departments Need To Get Creative

Despite the increasing number of cyber attacks, the budget for IT departments is generally being cut.

  • In 2020, spending by large companies (1,000 employees or more) decreased by an average of 26% compared to the previous year.
  • In small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs with 50 to 999 employees), the IT budget was also reduced by around 10%.
  • Expenditures for IT departments and information security are expected to be reduced this year as well.

In short, this development means that IT teams are expected to do more with fewer resources.

Perimeter Security Has Lost Its Importance

Business software is now used on many private computers and employees’ smartphones, which is why companies can no longer rely on a secure company network that is isolated from external threats. According to our experts, the best protection strategy for companies is to review cybersecurity and certify employees’ workplaces.

Training Should Be Practical And Consistent

In the home office, employees cannot always rely on company security and fast IT support. Therefore, now more than ever, employees should be well informed about current cyber threats and protect themselves against them. This requires systematic and comprehensive training – a few webinars are not enough.

Lower Personnel Costs Through Outsourcing

Paying a complete team with highly specialized cybersecurity experts represents a significant cost challenge for SMEs and large companies. Service providers for the security of IT systems and networks, also known as MSSP (Managed Security Service Provider), offer an excellent solution. When it comes to outsourcing, the training courses for permanent InfoSec employees (if there are any) are also crucial to work seamlessly with the MSSP.

Cloud Services Are On The Rise

According to IDT, a leading global media company for information and communication technology, spending on cloud services will consume around 32% of the IT budget in 2021, so it is essential to keep an eye on the monitoring and security of these platforms. Experts emphasize the importance of introducing tools to analyze team member activities – it is, among other things, essential to be informed about the unauthorized use of third-party software and cloud services. Furthermore, the transparency of the tasks carried out on the team member’s cell phone should be increased with the help of these tools.

The 2020 trends will persist in 2021, and 75% of employees worldwide will reassess their relationship with the office after the pandemic is over.
